General Info

You may go for the education, but the beauty of this most splendid 1917 mansion and the art inside its four floors will knock you out. The front of the building showcases a sculpture by Edouard Chassaing, portraying a doctor with massive hands holding up the body of a sick man. This sculpture is a good indication of what’s to come once you’re inside the museum. It is a treasure of medical paintings, sculpture and history from 2000 B.C. to modern times. The museum, which opened its doors in 1954, has many exhibits including milestones in medical imaging, a comprehensive history of ophthalmology, Civil War era artificial limbs, a turn-of-the-century apothecary shop and an early 20th Century dentist’s office.
