UIC Pavilion

WhirlyBall

WhirlyBall is a hybrid of lacrosse and basketball, played while riding in bumper cars. The 31,000-square-foot Lincoln Park location is, according to owner Sam Elias, the country's largest WhirlyBall facility (there are locations in Lombard and Vernon Hills, plus about a dozen more across the country). The "sport" sounds like a bizarre mash-up, but somehow it works.
Ten players are divided into red and yellow teams and take their position in bumper cars. Players are given a lacrosse-like handle to scoop and toss the game ball, a softball-sized Wiffle ball. On either end of the 50-by-80-foot court is a 10-foot-high goal, which is a circular hole 16 inches in diameter. Players try to shoot the wiffle ball through the hole.

Windy City ThunderBolts

The franchise known as the Windy City ThunderBolts started as the Will County Claws in 1995 and called their home at Lewis University’s Brennan Field in Romeoville. The Claws played in the struggling North Central League which started in 1994 with six teams, but only fielded four in 1995. The North Central League folded 18 games into its second season with the Claws finishing at 8-10. In 1996 the franchise would find a new league and a new name. The Will County Cheetahs joined the new four team Heartland League.

You’re not at the game, but you might as well be. With a hot dog, nachos, a cold beer, and a metal bleacher beneath you, Wrigleyville Rooftops offers the full Cubs game experience. The company owns and operates three rooftops overlooking Wrigley Field.

At their 3643 N. Sheffield location, you sit over left field, and while you are outside the park and across the street, still the view is good enough that you can call out the ump for his warped view of the strike zone. He just won’t hear you.

Bad weather? Head down to the bar one story down. It’s called the Hall of Fame Suite—expect a nice sports bar with a few jerseys on the wall. Don’t expect to watch the game from the windows, though—you’ll have to brave the weather on the bleachers above to see the game live. But the Hall of Fame Suite does offer flat screen TVs on just about every wall so that you won’t miss any of the action if you can’t handle the April chill or the July sun.
