General Info

Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey wanted to present ballet from their unique American experience, so in 1956, they formed the Touring Troupe. The ballet company was moved from New York to Chicago in 1995 by Gerald Arpino and since, has become Chicago’s premier classical ballet company. The Joffrey Ballet has performed in all of the 50 States and Mexico, Europe, the Middle East and the Orient.

Performances are held at the Historic Auditorium Theatre, built in 1889 by famed architects Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler - a theatre internationally recognized for its beauty, architectural integrity and perfect acoustics.

The Company has a dual approach to ballet; Robert Joffrey has pursued recreating the masterworks while Gerald Arpino has a more contemporary style. It’s troupe of amazing dancers perform a repertory of work by 80 choreographers. It has been the subject of two motion pictures, including the recent Robert Altman film “The Company,” based on a year in the life of the Joffrey.
