When it comes to entertainment, your choices run the gamut from the Lyric Opera and Chicago Symphony to at least 140 professional theaters, including the 1920's Chicago Theater, a Historic Landmark that now hosts a variety of performances. The Loop Theater District encompasses a range of venues, including the Goodman, Cadillac Palace, Ford Center for the Performing Arts and the LaSalle Bank theaters, plus the Auditorium Theater of Roosevelt University, all of which bring big-name shows to town.

 

The Annoyance Theater

The new home of Annoyance Productions (the troupe that brought you the long-running musical, "Coed Prison Sluts") opened in July, 2006 with a lobby bar and a 110-seat theater.

 


The Building Stage

The Building Stage company is made up of a variety of folks (actors, designers, technicians, directors, administrative staff, and board members) brought together by the exciting possibilities of making theater in a process driven by the spirit of investigation.

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Theater

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Theater offers downtown audiences the best opportunity to experience Chicago’s innovative off-Loop theater companies. A night at one of DCA Theaters is an entertaining, exciting glimpse into the variety of Chicago’s vibrant theater scene.

Studio Theater
Located just off the Randolph Street lobby, the Studio Theater is an incubator space that gives small theater companies the opportunity to share their work with downtown audiences. The Department of Cultural Affairs provides the space rent-free to encourage the growth of new creative talent.

Claudia Cassidy Theater
Located on the 2nd floor of the Randolph Street entrance, the Claudia Cassidy Theater is a 294-seat venue that provides space for staged readings, improv shows, workshops and panel discussions, and short-run productions.

Storefront Theater
Storefront Theater, 66 E. Randolph, is dedicated to giving small to mid-sized theater companies the opportunity to perform in a state of the art venue located in the heart of the downtown theater district.


The Chicago Theatre

The grandeur of The Chicago Theatre often leaves its visitors breathless. The elegant lobby, majestic staircase and beautiful auditorium, complete with murals above the stage and on the ceiling, are components of an amazing building called "the Wonder Theatre of the World" when it opened on October 26, 1921.

 


The Chicago Theatre Downstairs

The Theatre Downstairs is an intimate new 281-seat venue located on the lower level of The Chicago Theatre. This space enhances The Chicago Theatre's mission to increase the vitality of the Loop Theatre District and to produce and present a wide variety of first class entertainment.
The entrance to The Chicago Theatre Downstairs has a separate entrance from the Main Stage.

The Gift Theatre

 The Gift Theatre is dedicated to telling great stories on stage with honesty and simplicity. Since its 2002 debut, The Gift has consistently established itself as an actors’ theatre, consistently eschewing directorial cleverness for honest, powerful connections between the actors and the audience.


The Greenhouse Theater Center

This is the home of Chicago's hottest Off-Loop theater companies - a diverse mix of nationally acclaimed, award winning ensembles.


The House Theatre of Chicago

This theatre produces original work three times a year that combines live music, dance, spectacle and text to tell a story. Since its inception in 2001, the company has grown a national reputation and a loyal audience following comprised mostly of young adults.

The Neo-Futurists/The Neo-Futurarium

Although originally created as an ensemble to perform a specific show, The Neo-Futurists have grown to become one of the most highly regarded experimental theater companies in America.
From humble beginnings as the first late-night theater production in Chicago, we have expanded into a company that mounts full seasons of adventurous, smart, interactive theater while still pursuing the ideas that inspired our creation. Although we pride ourselves on focusing on the future, we will briefly look at the trail we have blazed in the past.


Theatre at the Center

The Center is the only professional Equity Theater in Northwest Indiana. Located just thirty-five minutes from Downtown Chicago, Theatre at The Center has its home at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, Indiana. All of their main-stage productions are fully produced in Munster and feature the work of professional actors, musicians, designers and craftsmen from throughout the Midwest.


Theo Ubique

Founded in 1997 by Fred Anzevino, Artistic Director, Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre is a Rogers Park-based Cabaret-Theatre Company.
It initially began performing at the Heartland Studio, producing an array of straight drama, comedy and musicals, and in 2004 started the cabaret-theatre trend in the Chicago area when it began producing musicals and revues at Michael James' No Exit Café-its home since then.
During its 12-year history, Theo Ubique produced 26 productions and received 18 Jeff Awards Non-Equity and 3 After Dark Awards.
The name Theo Ubique (pronounced thee-oh oo-bah-kway) is a combination of Greek and Latin words reflecting the company's mission to engage actors and audiences in an intimate and honest conversation with great theatrical works.

TimeLine Theatre Company

This is a Chicago Theater Company dedicated to presenting stories inspired by history that connect with today's social and political issues. TimeLine Theatre brings Chicago theater audiences provocative work that engages, educates, entertains and enlightens


Victory Gardens Theater

This restored historic venue was once a movie house but now presents live productions by a longtime theater mainstay, Victory Gardens Theater.
Cemented into local history as the site where FBI Agents gunned down notorious bank robber John Dillinger in 1934, the Biograph Theater is now the new home of Chicago's Tony Award-wining Victory Gardens Theatre.


Vittum Theater

Originally conceived as a magnet for community involvement in the arts, the Vittum Theater was opened in 1998 to aid in community building and to foster the personal growth of members of the Northwestern University Settlement House. Since that time, the theater has developed into a regionally recognized resource for quality arts programming for youth. Its annual Season for Young Audiences currently accommodates 13,000 school age children from over 120 schools in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

 


Woodstock Opera House

The Opera House was built in 1889 to house the library, council room, justice court, fire department & second floor auditorium for the City of Woodstock. The Patti Rosa Company provided the inaugural performance of MARGERY DAW on Thursday September 4, 1890. “The scenic effects were excellent, and in every way the affair was a brilliant success.” (The Sentinel)

Writers' Theatre

Since 1992, Writers’ Theatre has been an vital member of the Chicago Theatre Community.  Having recently celebrated its 15th Anniversary Season, Writers’ Theatre looks forward to continuing its leadership in the community for the next 15 years with great performance's.
