General Info

The Library was founded in 1887 by a bequest of Walter L. Newberry, pioneer, Chicago merchant, banker and land speculator. Newberry wanted a public library, free and open to all users, to serve the city he loved and helped to build. The Newberry's first librarian was William Fredrick Poole, one of the nation's leading librarians and compiler of Poole's Index to Periodical Literature.

The exquisite space is also available for rental for special events.
